Camp Wannarunaround is a fun-filled summer program focusing
on nutrition education and physical fitness. Kids from all over Phillips County
come together at Phillips Community College for two weeks of competition, recreation,
food and fun. Counselors representing schools and colleges from around the state
join the team of health professionals from Delta AHEC to help kids get motivated
to start a healthy school year.
Each day has a different theme (for example, Delta Day & Red, White &
Blue Day) and sets aside time for physical activities, a nutrition lesson, a
healthy snack and lunch. The camp’s meals are planned by Delta AHEC’s
registered dietician.
Campers are split into two teams (Fire & Ice). Each day starts with a Fire
Up period that really gets the whole camp excited for the day. Then it is on
to the day’s big event – team competition. Competition may include
anything from tug o’ war to volleyball or soccer. Each team attempts to
score points for themselves during competitions, scavenger hunts, flag painting
contests and other events. The ultimate goal of each team is to win the summer
competition.
After the two week camp, the campers transition to a weekly program that continues
with nutrition lessons and physical activity. Success in the program is measured
by The President’s Fitness Challenge. Each camper begins and ends the
program by completing the five events (sit-ups, push-ups, one mile run, shuttle
run and sit and reach) and having body measurements done.
