AHEC - Fort Smith Library

The Fort Smith AHEC Library/Learning Resource Center is located in Sparks
Regional Medical Center, 1311 South I Street, Fort Smith, AR 72901. This serves
as the library for the local Sebastian County Medical Society and also serves
the needs of Sparks staff and employees. As a designated AHEC library, the
librarian serves information needs for the following counties in western
Arkansas: Conway, Crawford, Faulkner, Franklin, Johnson, Logan, Montgomery,
Perry, Polk, Pope, Scott, Sebastian, Van Buren, Yell.
Available services include Internet and World Wide Web access, reference
assistance by phone, fax, e-mail or in person, and computer literature searches
on all the National Library of Medicine's databases (many citations have
abstracts). Instruction is available for health professionals and health
sciences students who wish to do their own searching. Interlibrary loan services
are available through local, state, and national networks. The librarian will
provide monthly lists on current topics and will also provide instruction for
Grateful Med. Some of the above services entail a fee; contact the Librarian for
details.

AHEC - Northeast Library

The AHEC - Northeast library is located in a 2,200 square foot spacious,
newly renovated area on the first floor of St. Bernards Regional Medical Center
Annex Building at 223 East Jackson, Jonesboro. Hours are Monday through Friday,
8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. After hours the facilities of the library will be made
available to physicians, AHEC medical staff, and the residents.
The library serves the AHEC - Northeast Family Practice Residents and
faculty, medical staff, nursing, and pharmacology students for the University of
Arkansas for Medical Sciences. The library also serves all area physicians and
health professionals within a 16 county area in northeast Arkansas. The services
offered by the library support patient care, teaching, continuing education, and
medical research.
The medical library has a core collection of textbooks and a small collection
of audiovisual materials. The journal holdings number 126 titles.
AHEC - Northeast library is a member of the National Network of Libraries of
Medicine, South Central Region, a regional five-state network of hospital and
academic libraries. This network provides interlibrary loan services for
borrowing books, obtaining photocopies of journal articles, and audiovisual
software. It is also a member of OCLO "Amigos", a nationwide network that
provides for a full range of interlibrary loan services.

AHEC - Northwest Library

The Area Health Education Center Northwest Library, established in 1975, is
located at Washington Regional Medical Center, 1125 N. College Ave.,
Fayetteville, AR 72703. The library is located on the first floor of the
hospital, across the hallway from the ICU/Surgical waiting areas.
The library offers almost 200 journal titles and 1500 textbooks in medicine,
nursing, and allied health. The library has full biomedical bibliographic
database searching capability with a CDROM Pentium-based personal computer
workstation that is accessible to the library staff and patrons alike. This
system includes full MEDLINE, CINAHL (Cumulative Index to Nursing & Allied
Health Literature), and HEALTHSTAR ( a compilation of several databases which
feature information specific to hospitals and health care reform issues). In
addition, Washington Regional Medical Center has placed the HEALTH REFERENCE
CENTER database in the library for patron, library staff, and public use. HRC is
a 3 year database of patient, consumer health and professional information with
some full text capability. In addition, the Library participates in two computer
based interlibrary loan systems.
Tours of the facility, providing interlibrary loan services, performing
literature searches, teaching computer based searching skills, and locating
needed books, journals, and audiovisual materials are among the many services
the library staff performs daily.
The library directly supports all educational programs, medical research, and
patient care at the AHEC - Northwest site and all health professionals in eleven
counties in Northwest Arkansas (Baxter, Marion, Benton, Newton, Boone, Searcy,
Carroll, Stone, Izard, Washington, and Madison). The public is welcome to use
any library materials in house, but are not allowed to borrow any items. A
photocopier is available to the public at a nominal per-page charge.
The center is open Monday through Thursday 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m ; Friday
7:30 a.m. - 8:00 p.m.

AHEC - Pine Bluff Library

The Area Health Education Center - Pine Bluff Melville Library was
established in September, 1973. Melville Library serves the AHEC - Pine Bluff
Family Practice Residency Program Residents and medical students from the
University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, the medical staff of Jefferson
Regional Medical Center, and all other local health science students and
professionals within a 14 county area in southeast Arkansas. The library has a
collection of print and non-print items in the fields of medicine, nursing, and
allied health sciences.
Melville Library is located on the grounds of Jefferson Regional Medical
Center in the Area Health Education Center building, 4010 Mulberry Street, Pine
Bluff. Hours are Monday through Thursday, 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Friday, 8:00
a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Services provided by the library staff consist of performing literature
searches, locating materials (books, journals, and/or audiovisual materials),
initiating and filling interlibrary loans, computer assisted research (Ovid,
Medline and the Internet), bibliography checks, and tours of the facility.
Books, video programs, and audiotapes are checked out for one week from the time
issued. Journals, whether bound or unbound, remain in the library. If a
particular article is needed, a copy machine is available for individual use.
Literature search requests may be made via telephone (voice-mail after
hours), e-mail, fax or in person.
A collection of antique medical books is on display along with several pieces
of antique medical equipment.
Patient education pamphlets/borchures are available for many diseases and
illnesses.

AHEC - South Arkansas Library

AHEC South Arkansas Library was established in 1974 and is the only medical
library serving the rural counties of southern Arkansas (Ashley, Bradley,
Calhoun, Columbia, Dallas, Ouachita and Union). Learning resources are provided
to the staff of six hospitals, as well as to students attending several medical
and allied health training programs. The Resource Center is located on the 1st
floor of the MCSA Professional Building located at 460 West Oak Street, one
block west of El Dorado City Hall.
The Resource Center offers current medical journals, medical reference and
textbooks in order to serve the health professionals in our area. Computer
searching is offered both Online and with a CD-Rom system. All possible services
are offered to UAMS students and Family Practice Residents. Students from other
colleges are welcome, and the public is especially encouraged to visit and
become familiar with the available material for keeping up-to-date in medicine
and health.
The center is open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Borrowing
practices and charges are available upon request, and are subject to change.

The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences Area Health Education Center
- Southwest Library was established in 1975.
Our library is located in a spacious 2000 square feet of the first floor,
west wing in this three-sotry stucco building.
The library serves the AHEC - Southwest Family Practice Residency Program,
University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences medical and nursing students,
UAMS/AHEC - Southwest Respiratory Therapy, Radiology and Medical Technology
programs. We provide services for ten area hospitals, fifteen healthcare
institutions and more than two hundred physicians and healthcare professionals.
We serve a nine county area in southwest Arkansas and a four county area in
northeast Texas.
Services provided by the library staff include literature searches, computer
assisted research (Medline, CINAHL, Internet), assistance in locating and
checking out books, journals, audiovisuals, audiovisual equipment, bibliography
verification, and tours of the library and computer lab.
Our computer lab is comprised of thirteen computers and workstations.
Numerous programs are accessible, including the Internet.
The AHEC - Southwest Medical Library is open to the public.
We are open from 8:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. We are open
late one night a week when UAMS outreach classes are in session.
