UAMS / AHEC Northeast Recruiting Goals
  • To increase student awareness of and interest in health careers
  • To provide information and opportunities to NE Arkansas students interested in pursuing a health career
  • To provide pre-medical support to college students through free practice MCAT tests, mock interview experience, personal statement review, and/or individual consultations

UAMS-AHEC Northeast is pleased to present the following programs:

Support for Undergraduate Pre-Medical Students

  • Free MCAT Practice tests are offered several times each year on Arkansas State University campus

  • Mock Interviews can be scheduled; location is UAMS – AHEC Northeast found in the St. Bernards Annex, 223 East Jackson Ave., Jonesboro, Arkansas

  • Individual consultations can be scheduled to discuss the medical school application process, requirements, personal statement review, or other questions the pre-medical student may have

II.  School Visits :  Health Career Presentations can be given to groups of students, such as clubs, homerooms, or classes (AP/ honors,  chemistry, physics, algebra, Career Orientation, MedProEd, health, etc) .  Adjustments in subject matter and length are made for each group according to the interests, needs, and age of the students being served.  Certified teacher and recruiter Sandra Lusby suggests the following topics:

  • So Many Choices: Arkansas Health Careers

  • Is There a Doctor in the House?:  What It Takes to Become a Doctor

  • What Not to Say:  The Interview

  • Pharmacy Phun: How Science and Math Relate to your Future Career

  • “Now, Why Can’t I Wear My Nose Ring and Flip Flops?”:  Business Etiquette for Job Shadowers and Interns

  • We Can Only Imagine:  Geriatric/Disability Sensitivity  Training

  • Show and Tell Anatomy:  16 BIOLIKE organs are used in this visual activity.

  • “What the Heck is a Lab Tech?”: Student involved activity (recommended for Career Orientation classes)

  • Bones, Groans, and Accident-Prone:  A look at radiology, injuries, and the process of healing

  • CPR Training:  American Heart Association curriculum

  • Medical Terminology:  Deciphering common medical terms (offered in 1—5 day units)

  • Virtual Surgery:  An online activity  that is fun and educational

  • Medical Jeopardy:  A game using health care trivia

  • Public Health:  Using a black light to illuminate ways to prevent certain communicable diseases such as staph, colds, and flu

III.  Medical Applications of Science for Health MASH camp is an excellent two week summer  enrichment program that allows rising high school juniors and seniors to shadow health professionals and attend workshops that enhance their experience in the health care field.  Many of Arkansas’ brightest students have participated in MASH which provided the catalyst needed to spur them on toward a health profession.  AHEC Northeast MASH students participate in dissections, CPR training, casting, a UAMS tour, and daily job-shadowing allowing first-hand experience in a variety of health care environments.

The 2008 application deadline is March 17.  AHEC Northeast MASH will held be June 9 - 20, 2008.

IV.  One Day Enrichment Programs for High School Seniors

Virtual or Clinical Shadowing Events held at St. Bernards Medical Center in Jonesboro, Arkansas

  • A Day in the Life – Variety invites an assortment of health professionals (pharmacist, physical therapist, doctor, rad tech, nurse, lab tech) to discuss a typical day in their life, required education and training, and other information relating to their career.  Participants must be a high school senior and have a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or better.  (Fall Event)

  • A Day in the Life of a Nurse presents nurses at different levels of training (LPN, RN, BSN, APN, CRNA) to explain their typical day, training options, interesting cases, and advantages/disadvantages.  Participants must be a high school senior and have a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or better. (Fall Event)

  • A Day in the Life: ASU Medical Opportunities is a one day event for those interested in a health career and also interested in going to Arkansas State University after graduation. Representatives from ASU Nursing, Radiologic Science, Physical Therapy, Clinical Laboratory Science, Social Work, Communication Disorders, and Pre-Professions will discuss their training programs.  Participants must be a high school senior and have a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or better. (Fall Event)

  • A Day in the Life of a Health Care Professional is a clinical experience offered to those who know the health profession in which they are interested, but need a job shadowing experience to confirm their choice. In addition to the application process, a 3.5 GPA, and essay, students must complete institutional requirements.  (Spring Event)
